One of the world's biggest secrets is
coming out...Why do straight women love
gay romance?

What is it that attracts straight women to
the idea of two men falling in love? Is it the muscles? The mystery of the male
mind? The idea of true love overcoming all odds? How has it changed who these
women are and how they see the world? And how powerful is this once-silent army
of readers in the fight for equality?

Readers, authors, publishers, editors,
reviewers and cover artists share their opinions and tell some very personal
stories that will make you laugh, cry and ultimately inspire, as 32 women
across 9 countries and 4 continents--including New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann, Amelia from
the Huffington Post, bestselling gay romance author Carol Lynne and
award-winning publisher and author Laura Baumbach--finally reveal...

Why Straight Women Love Gay Romance eBook Kris Jacen Kris Jacen Geoffrey Knight

I bought this book because I knew that several people whom I got to know online are featured in it and of course I was interested in hearing more of their opinions (including Wave, whose blog I review for :)). I enjoyed this book overall, there was a lot of inspiration, passion, fun in it. At the same time I could not help but be just a tiny bit annoyed at the idea that these women had to answer this question in the first place. I have nothing against Geoff Knight, I like his stories, and I enjoyed his respectful and interesting questions, I am sure he meant no disrespect, when he came up with the idea for this book, since this question keeps coming up online on and off, but I still wonder, why? Why in the name do I (as straight woman as they come) have to justify my love for gay fiction and gay romance/mm romance, gay romantic mysteries, gay historicals? Why? Do we ask those men (gay or straight) who love reading het romance (yes, as few as they are, they do exist, believe it or not)why they love reading it?

I don't know, the bottom line is I enjoyed the book overall, I loved the answers, but I still think that question in itself is putting us in the position as having to justify something and I have no idea why we should.

I guess that if the thesis of the book was framed as "let's get to know some women writers and readers of gay romance", I would have enjoyed it more, because this is what it was in effect, the questions went quite in depth and did not stop at "why do you love gay romance"

Why Straight Women Love Gay Romance eBook Kris Jacen Kris Jacen Geoffrey Knight Reviews

This was a fun/enlighten/thoughtful read. I found myself agreeing with so many of the participants ideas and opinion. I got some questions answered by the authors interviewed, (i say with a slick smile). Overall a thought provoking and enlighten book. Enjoyable read.
I'm a little torn on this one.

On the one hand, I felt like the various interviews were interesting, and I liked getting other reader's perspectives. Some of the personal stories were very powerful, esp. those who wrote about their children coming out, being bullied, etc. The connections made through m/m romance can be very strong and it was great to see that my circle of friends is not the only group that has experienced the same thing.

However, I was expecting something a bit more academic. I know that there are studies of all kinds out there- hasn't anyone looked into this topic yet?

I attended some presentations at a popular culture academic conference this year and there are studies on everything, people studying all sorts of minutia, so I find it hard to believe that there aren't people in academic settings looking into the question of what draws straight women to gay romances.

Basically, I wanted to have a higher level view because I have spoken to a lot of women on a one-on-one level as a slash reader and writer for years- I was hoping for a bit more than what I've already read.

I felt like there were opportunities to dig into some of the respondents answers that were missed or ignored by the author, which was disappointing for sure.

This is a great idea but I would love to see it taken further.

Also, I felt like it was a bit unfair that the actual interview portion of the book ends at roughly 80% of the book (I read it on so don't have an exact page number) and the rest of the book was a bit of fiction that I didn't really care for. I paid for this book and I wanted it to be ALL about women reading gay romance- I didn't buy it for an actual gay romance story. Maybe I'm just picky but it actually kind of pissed me off.

YMMV.
... not enough insight and discussion. While I fit snuggly into the demographic of this author's subjects, and 8 enjoyed some of the stories, I would have enjoyed more psychology and male input in the book as a whole.
This book may not be what you think it is. What it is, a truly fascinating project Geoffrey Knight started and described well in his explanation on why & how this project came about. The introduction Redefining Normal by Suzanne Brockmann was a very moving story, especially since I have read the book series she discusses. The story of her son was inspiring, how they made life as accepting as possible as a parent to a gay child...I LOVED IT & was inspired! The different women & their stories varied yet all are interesting &/or intriguing!

So many women are now going to be looking for new material after coming off their latest obsession book-wise. With the explosion of e-books & thanks to not having to hide embarrassing book covers, I suspect many STRAIGHT WOMEN WILL SOON BE LOVING GAY ROMANCE! Check it out ladies....might as well or you'll never know!

HIGHLY RECOMMNED to all because it is an interesting social phenomenon that Geoffrey Knight has brought out of the closet!!!!!!
As a straight woman who enjoys gay romance--and mystery, adventure, and sci-fi--I wanted to read this book find out what motivated these kindred spirits. On that basis, I enjoyed the book very much. That enjoyment was tempered, however, by what I can only judge to be poor editing. It was rife with run-on sentences, I was frequently confused by seemingly contradictory statement due to missing words. Considering the number of contributors who are writers and/or editors, it did not present as a strong recommendation for pursuing other works by the authors, or seeking out titles by the editors/publishers.
